How Do I Know If I Am Eligible? Special Olympics Youth Programs are designed for youth with intellectual/developmental disabilities and their families. Individuals with an intellectual disability may display deficits in general cognitive abilities which limit performance in one or more aspects of daily life such as: communication, social participation, functioning at school, or personal independence.

Individuals may be diagnosed with: Autism, PDD-NOS, Down Syndrome, FASD, ADD, ADHD, Seizure Disorder, Blindness, Deafness, Acquired Brain Injury, or undiagnosed deficits in cognitive functioning or communication.
If you are unsure if you are eligible, please contact us and we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Youth programs provide athletic training and physical education opportunities for children with an intellectual disability ages 2-12 and their families. There are two youth programs to choose from:

Active Start for ages 2-6

Active Start is a family-centered activity program targeting children with intellectual/developmental disabilities ages 2 to 6. Through the program, children learn basic motor skills such as running, jumping, kicking and throwing in a fun and safe environment.

FUNdamentals for ages 7-12

FUNdamentals is a continuation of the Active Start program for young athletes with intellectual/developmental disabilities ages 7 to 12. The skills transition from basic movement skills to basic sport skills, providing participants with a more in-depth introduction to sport related motor skills along with training and competition, while maintaining and atmosphere of fun and meaningful interaction.
FUNdamentals runs as a 12-week, one hour per week program.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS IS WINNING AT LIFE: You may have thought that Special Olympics was just a few days of sport competition once or twice a year. In reality, the training for competition is as important as the competition itself.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS INVOLVES INDIVIDUALS OF ALL AGES AND ABILITY LEVELS: Special Olympics includes athletes with low motor abilities as well as highly-skilled athletes who can compete in a higher level of sport both in and out of Special Olympics competitions.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS IS A YEAR-ROUND PROGRAM: Athletes who participate in Special Olympics receive a lifetime of learning through sport.

ATHLETES BUILD MUSCLE, SHARPEN THEIR MOTOR SKILL, GAIN SELF-CONFIDENCE AND DEVELOP SOCIAL SKILLS THAT HELP THEM LIVE A BETTER LIFE: It is the same as when you learned to catch a ball, or ride a bike. Remember the joy of achievement and the confidence you felt? Special Olympics athletes feel it too.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS IS TRAINING FOR LIFE IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE: The men, women, boys and girls train in community gyms, playgrounds, fields and courts. They are preparing themselves for competition and interaction with family, work, school and community life.

THE ATHLETES ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO BENEFIT FROM SPECIAL OLYMPICS: The families of the athletes, coaches and volunteers reap the rewards of participation as well.

THE ORGANIZATION OFFERS OVER 100 SPORT PROGRAMS THROUGH OVER 40 COMMUNITIES IN THE PROVINCE. Athletes include people with an intellectual disability, and/or closely related developmental disabilities, from five years of age to seniors. Athletes at all ability levels participate in competitions at the community, district, provincial, national and international levels.
